Puja is veneration to the almighty. The almighty who made us with the Panchmahabhutas and who sowed a seed of his divinity in us is invoked and revered by means of puja. Puja is invoking this divinity in us and aligning it with the greater ocean of divinity of the almighty. During a puja one surrenders himself to the almighty, pays gratitude, praise the lord, adore the Lord using various rituals, sing songs of praise, chant mantras and give offerings. Puja is performed to invoke positivity in us, a positivity which takes us to higher spiritual octave of reality getting us closer to the almighty. It is also performed keeping a specific desire in mind, for health, wealth, peace, for obstacle free life; the list is endless.

All AboutYagnas and Homams:
Most of the Indian houses do conduct yagnas or homams in the households. These yagnas or homams are conducted for different deities and for different occasions.  The word yagna or homam originates from the Sanskrit word Yajan which means prayer, surrender or to sacrifice.
Yagnas or homams also mean action without having any expectation
Yagnas in Epics: Yagnas or homams are being practiced since ancient times. Earlier, our sages or the rishis spent one-third of their lives performing yagnas or homams. In fact, even our epic like Ramayana has a mention of homams.
In the great epic of Ramayana, it is mentioned that on the recommendation of Sage Vashishta, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya performed the Putrakameshti Yajna. This yagna was performed under the supervision of Sage Rishishringani, who was considered as an expert in Yajurveda. The yagna was performed successfully and upon its completion, the Lord of Fire, Agnidev appeared and presented King Dasharatha with a bowl of sweet. This sweet was then given to the three queens in order to disseminate his sons Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna.
Even in Mahabharata, Yudhisthira performed the Rajasuyayagna after the coronation ceremony at Indraprastha, in order to become the King of the World. Yudhisthira did not want to seek power for himself, but he wanted to establish and defend his religion all over the world. He wanted to do this by suppressing the kings who have sinned in their lives.
Thus, the yagnas or homams have been in existence since time immemorial.
Types of Yagna or Homams: The gyaanyagna is considered as the most auspicious yagna. Here are some of the other popular types of yagnas that are performed by people:
Process of Yagna: The process of every yagna or homam is more or less the same. What changes are the deity and the mantras. Each yagna consists of setting up of an altar or vedee, lighting it with fire and offerings made to the deity, also known as aahuti. Then mantras are chanted in order to evoke energy and this is followed by havishya or the food offerings made to the Gods. It is believed that the food is carried by Lord Agni and hence all the food offerings are made to the fire that is ignited for the yagna.
Why is Yagna Performed?: Yagna or homam is conducted for many reasons. It is believed that yagna helps in treating many diseases. Yagna is said to provide parjanya to the person who conducts it. Parjanya is said to be shower of vital energy and spiritual strength provided from the cosmos. It is also believed that if a yagna is conducted for longer duration, we will get better effects.
Yagnas or homams are performed in an attempt to gain a happy and peaceful life. It is considered as a science and a method of living and self-realization.
When is Yagna Performed?: A yagna can be performed anytime during your life. However, generally people who go through a bad phase in life or are facing some bad influence of certain planets perform yagna or homam. It is always better to consult a good astrologer and taking into consideration your horoscope and the type of issues you are facing, the right yagna can be performed.
When the correct yagna is performed, the benefits are sure to come your way. However, make sure that the priest whom you are considering to perform the yagna is reputed and knows the mantras well. This is to make sure that the yagna is successful and fruitful. An effective yagna will come with benefits.
